Here’s a preview of the three bands playing at the jazz/funk/fusion showdown happening at Zydeco tonight.
The headliner, Snarky Puppy, has made the rounds through Birmingham several times before, including a stop at University of Alabama at Birmingham to do a clinic in their music department. They are truly a jazz fusion band (the bandleader describes their sound with the word “jafunkadansion”), where they combine elements of afrobeat, traditional and experimental jazz, and prog rock. Author Cicily Janus describes Snarky Puppy as “one of the most inventive in sound and funk since Maynard Ferguson’s fusion years”.
The Mike Dillon Band is the second act of the evening. Mike Dillon is someone I’ve seen many times in many incarnations (with the bands Critters Buggin’, Garage a Trois, Illuminasti Trio, The Dead Kenny G’s, and with musicians Les Claypool, Ani Difranco, Marco Benevento, Skerik, Stanton Moore to name a few) and he’s one of my favorite New Orleans based musicians. He describes himself on his website as “the electronic ViBraphonic goGO punk FUNK rock Jazz Screaming Being” which is a pretty accurate description. Also, how many times have you seen someone tear up the vibraphone and timbales like this man?
The opener, Dallas based nu-jazz band the Funky Knuckles is comprised of sidemen from such acts as Beyonce, Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, and P Diddy.
